Rena (レナ?): Rena can bear various meanings and kanji equivalents. For example, written as "麗奈" it can mean "beautiful" and "Nara" respectively. [1]

Backstory[]

Rena lived an ordinary life. However, she soon grew to dislike herself. This was in part to bullying and her personality. After meeting Kyubey, Rena made a contract and wished ‘to become someone else.’ While it was obvious that she wanted to become a completely different person, Kyubey simply gave her the ability to transform into other people and pretend to be them. She despised this up until meeting Momoko at a concert. At the arrival of a witch, the duo manages to defeat it thanks to Rena's abilities. The younger girl would soon grow an enlarging attachment to Momoko.

Afterwards, Kaede would soon join the team. This causes Rena to become jealous and be outright cruel to her in some instances. Furthermore, she found the other to be the complete opposite of her, a reminder of her self-hatred. Despite this, in thanks to Kaede saving her, they would soon become friends with Rena calling her a "servant."

Relationships[]

  • Iroha Tamaki: Rena initially wasn't very fond of Iroha and didn't trust her at all. However, after episode 3, Rena and Iroha become friends after helping each other. Later, it is shown that they actually keep in touch with each other and can work very well together.
  • Yachiyo Nanami: Although Rena is awkward around Yachiyo like many other people, she actually admires her for many things. Yachiyo is kind to Rena and forgives her when she steals her donut.
  • Kaede Akino: Rena's best friend. They initially met through Momoko and didn't get along because Rena saw Kaede as someone who would be a weight to their team. However, they later formed a bond even though they often break their friendship and usually Kaede apologizes first and everything is solved. Despite that, Rena does care for Kaede and would do anything to protect, save or be with her. Kaede is able to tell what exactly Rena thinking is.
  • Momoko Togame: A very good friend to Rena. They initially met in an idol concert and quickly discovered they're Magical Girls and came closer due to their love for idols. However, after Momoko attempted to insert Kaede into their group, Rena became mean to Momoko and ignored her for a week. However, after meeting one day randomly Rena used her shapeshift magic and transformed into Kaede, but Momoko knew well enough Rena to understand her through her impersonation. Momoko acts like a mother to Rena and sometimes teases her. Despite trusting each other, Momoko used to hide the Magical Girl system's secrets to protect Rena from falling to despair.

Family[]

Parents
Rena's parents are mentioned as being very busy and not much at home. In fact, her father's job had the whole family move all the time and she and her brother had to change schools constantly as well. Later, Rena's father gets a more stable job, and her mother got a part-time job. Rena understands that they're working hard for her and her brother and doesn't blame them for her school life.
